Ferris Wheel Press (Part 2)

   

I just got my hands on another set of Ferris Wheel Press inks. These inks were released in 2023. It is called the New York New York collection inspired from sights seen in the city itself. Right off the bat, the packaging of the ink represents the colour very well. Animals representing people similar to that of Zootopia. 

Once opening the package, all are in 38 ml bottles with the classic Ferris Wheel Press Branding.

Swatching time.

 

Central Park Greens inspired by a walk in the park. It is a very earthy colour like that of trees, grass, and moss. Depending on the paper, it can easily go from light moss green to dark forest green. It may not my go-to colour, but the dark colour balances the other two really well.

Lights on Broadway inspired by New York Times Square where musicals, plays and concert sweeps you away. It does reminds that of the neon light board where it grabs your attention for the latest shows. The colour ranges from light magenta pink to dark purple magenta. Again not my go-to colour but complements the other inks of this collection. 

Out of the three inks, this is definitely my favourite, Grand Central Skies. Now it is not only sparkly (thanks to the glitter), but I tend to gravitate to blues to blue greens (so personal taste, don't come at me). This ink is inspired by the rotunda (a round building or room) in Grand Central Station in New York. The colour ranges from teal blue to green blue. As much as I love this colour, I need to remind myself that if I was going to fill this in the 

fountain pen, the glitter might cross- contaminate with other inks. So either I designate on pen for glitter ink only or wash it really (capital R)well.

All these ink can be used on its own, but I love using it all together as shown above. The green, teal blue, and magenta really go together like a home of New York. I like that not one stands out more than the other. All in perfect harmony. This round of inks was again so much fun, so I am looking forward to my next Ferris Wheel Press inks.

Ferris Wheel Press Ink (part 1)

It has been a long time since I last written anything about art supplies. (cough I have been busy cough)

Recently I have been really into inks and fountain pen that I have quite a collection if I say so myself. There is one brand that I have been following a lot which is Ferris Wheel Press. They are a Canadian stationery company who are on a mission to create new joy of writing again. I have been very fortunate enough to try these inks out. * (Now what I am going to say is simply my words and preference, so do not come at me) Also if you reach to the end of the blog there is 10% discount link for Ferris Wheel Press purchase that you can use.

 This is ink is called Algonquin Maple which is part of 2020 Autumn in Ontario Collection. (85ml bottle)

As name applies, the inspiration is drawn from Algonquin Park Red Maple Leaf. 

As much as I love how the packaging continues the theme of maple forest. At the same time, there are gold foiling which make it very sophisticated. It makes you want to keep and make you extra guilty if you throw it out. After admiring the outside, the bottle comes with a personal bag. (very extra but I love it)

The next one is Morningside Mint part of the 2021 Morningside collection (spring collection). Honestly this is one of my favourites. Right from the start, the packaging design is so good with the repeating patterns of mint motif. With the 85ml, it comes with its own pouch.

Last but not the least is the Writing Desk. This ink is part of the Curious Collaboration Collection where they collaborated with Toronto's stationery store: Wonder Pens. 

In the photo, the bottle size is 38ml so this does not come with its own pouch like 85ml. But fear not the package is still hitting 10s across the board where they use the Wonder Pen's store front as part of the design. 

Now that I finish gushing about the looks of the bottle, the most important part is the colour which I have so much fun ink swatching.

They are all so pretty:

Wonder Pen- Writing Desk is a very warm wood brown which reminds me of wooden school desk. Depending on the paper, there is a green like gold sheen which makes it really special.

Autumn in Ontario- Algonquin Maple is a really strong bright red (like a crimson) like that of the maple leaf. 

Morningside Collection- Morningside Mint is a very soft yellow green like that of mint. To me it reminds me of jade so this colour is very comforting to me. Also I really love this colour out of the three because of how pastel and soft it is. Again depending the paper, the ink colour can somewhat shift.

All in all, I really enjoy the product and will be looking forward to future releases. 

Swatch: Daniel Smith Watercolour

To be honest, this watercolour was quite expensive due to its ingredient. So out of my insane mind, I bought them for the sake of test and swatch. I will not lie the colour really truly glides on the paper really well. The fact that the paint simply mix with water almost seems like it melted. I like the fact that the pigment does not disappear at the lighter range shade. Is it worth it? Honestly it is not bad but you can also have the colour range and shades with other brands. So just using the small blob cane pushed.

But now it is in my hand. I am going to test other brands that I have in hand to see if the range and the purity colour is any different.

Swatch: Acrylic markers

 

After testing out the many acrylic markers that is in my hand, I realized it because it is water-based marker it can semi-act like that of watercolour. In a way, I need to be careful if I was going to do mixed media. But for the most part, once the marker dries overnight it is quite water resistant. At the same time, most of the marker of layering it require the light colour first than the dark colour over top to prevent ghosting of other colours. 

MY HOLY GRAIL: It is the Uni Posca because of how opaque that sucker can go. It is easier to layer due to its fast drying time.

It was an interesting journal especially I went to look into which possible background medium will go well with the markers and to the markers it self.

Purple Page Before and After

 AT FIRST, I thought this page was the one...after a week later... WHO WAS I KIDDING!!!

UPGRADE TIME!

This page need to heavy lifting which mean add-ons.

After the fast forward experience later....

NOW this is more like it which have a better layout of space. It allows the eye to move around since this is collage the irregular writing space will balance nicely with the collage.

Hand Study

 

It has been a long since I last did some hand study. 

Starting with:

- quick sketch with marker to loosen hand

- relearning to not stretch my fingers

Day 2

Second warm-up exercise: half blind contour

Note: check out Wonder Pens  This Toronto small business sales many amazing stationery. One of the greatest thing that they do is that they will sale 2ml ink sample sizes. This allows one to test the ink colour before committing to a full size. 

I had a fun discovery in learning to sketch with fountain pen. It is very similar to liner, but I felt it was so much fun to see the ink shade and line variety that I can make with the pen. I had an easier time using the Plaisir than that of Lamy due to the weight. I am looking forward to continue to use fountain pen to sketch.

Well...I'M BACK!!!!

Movie: Chokotto Kyoto Ni Sundemita, 京都小住, ちょこっと京都に住んでみた。

Director: Takuma Yoshimi 

Year Release: December 29, 2019

Summary:

Eto Kana, a 27 years old designer, resigned from her company due to personal interpersonal relationships. At her mother's request, she goes to Kyoto to take care of her granduncle for a week. Once Kana arrived instead of taking care of her granduncle's injury, which was the main purpose of the trip, he gave her a hand-drawn map and gave her tasks to complete. As each day passed, she realized her granduncle's true intention was for her to discover the little pleasure and self-healing in daily life.
